"Women who are being subtly abused don't ask me 'Am I being abused?', they just know something isn't right and they are struggling to figure out what and why."

After 25+ years working as a therapist within the NHS, at Cambridge University Staff Counselling Service and in private practice, I have turned toward a neglected area of research - that of the subtle abuse of women by their intimate partner.

Some women were presenting in therapy with depression, anxiety or low self-esteem, but seemingly without history to suggest a cause. I gradually detected that the cause was their partner's unrecognised subtly abusive behaviour.

I am now dedicated to ensuring subtle abuse and its devastating effects on individuals and families can be recognised and receives the focus it deserves.
